How words, pages and reading time are estimated

The tool starts from a words-per-page value looked up from your font size and line spacing, then divides or multiplies to convert between words and pages — and estimates reading time from an average adult reading speed of 225 words per minute.

Why the numbers

Why 1.5-spacing isn't single ÷ 1.5

Line spacing does not scale word density in a straight line. A 12pt 1.5-spaced page holds about 375 words — a published typographic figure — not the 333 you would get from dividing the single-spaced 500 by 1.5. We use the looked-up tables so the estimate matches what writers and instructors actually reference.

Font size shifts the density too

Smaller type fits more: a single-spaced page holds about 500 words at 12pt, 550 at 11pt and 600 at 10pt. Double those denominators for double spacing. Wide fonts (Arial, Verdana) fill a page faster than compact serifs (Times New Roman), so pick the size closest to your actual document.

It depends on your font size and line spacing. In a standard 12pt serif font, 1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced and about 4 pages double-spaced (1.5-spacing lands in between, around 2.7 pages). These figures use the common publishing averages of roughly 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 per double-spaced page at 12pt.

Double spacing puts a full blank line between every line of text, so a page holds about half as many words as the same page single-spaced. At 12pt that is roughly 500 words per page single-spaced versus 250 double-spaced. Most academic essays are required to be double-spaced, so a "5-page paper" usually means about 1,250 words, not 2,500.

We use the looked-up figure (375) rather than a computed one so the estimate matches the tables writers and instructors actually reference.

Reading time uses an average adult silent-reading speed of about 225 words per minute, so time (minutes) = words ÷ 225. A 1,000-word piece is therefore roughly 4.4 minutes. Actual speed varies widely with difficulty and reader — technical or unfamiliar material reads slower — so use it as a ballpark for planning, not a precise figure.
