How SGPA rolls up into CGPA
Your CGPA is the average of your per-semester SGPAvalues on the 10-point scale. The standard rule is a plain (equal-weight) average — add every semester's SGPA and divide by the number of semesters. If your university weights semesters by their credit load, switch to credit-weighted mode.

Equal-weight vs credit-weighted
When every semester carries the same credits, a plain average and a credit-weighted average give exactly the same CGPA. The two only diverge when your semesters differ in credit load.
When to use each
Frequently asked questions
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the grade point average for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) rolls up every semester completed so far into one cumulative figure. This tool takes your per-semester SGPAs and combines them into an overall CGPA on the 10-point scale.
The most common rule is a plain average of your semester SGPAs: add them up and divide by the number of semesters. For example, SGPAs of 8.0, 7.5, 8.2, 8.8, 9.0, 8.5, 8.7 and 9.1 across 8 semesters average to a CGPA of 8.475. Some universities weight each semester by its credits instead — switch to credit-weighted mode for that.
Use equal-weight (a simple average) unless your university specifically says semesters are weighted by credits. Most Indian universities that publish an SGPA→CGPA formula use the simple average. When every semester carries the same number of credits the two methods give exactly the same CGPA anyway.
Only when your semesters carry different credit loads. If every semester has the same credits, credit-weighting and a plain average produce an identical CGPA. When credit loads differ, credit-weighting lets a heavier semester move your CGPA more than a lighter one.
