Methodology

Why there is no single CGPA-to-percentage formula

Every Indian university defines its own CGPA-to-percentage conversion in its regulations — often per scheme and per stream. This tool stores each cited formula and applies (or inverts) exactly the one your university uses, instead of forcing everyone through the CBSE ×9.5 rule.

The University of Mumbai engineering piecewise rule (7.1 × CGPA + 12 below 7, 7.4 × CGPA + 12 at/above 7) was repealed effective 1 January 2026 — Mumbai now issues a marks-based certificate. Use it only to back-calculate pre-2026 results, never for current transcripts.

Frequently asked questions

Because there is no single national conversion — each university (and often each scheme or stream) defines its own rule in its academic regulations. CBSE popularised a simple ×9.5 rule, but VTU, JNTU, Anna University and Mumbai University each publish different formulas (linear, affine or piecewise). Using the wrong one can shift your percentage by several points, so always pick the exact university and scheme that issued your grade card.

CBSE uses the ×9.5 rule: indicative percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a CGPA of 8.0 becomes 76%, 9.0 becomes 85.5%, and 10 becomes 95%. The 9.5 multiplier comes from averaging the mid-points of the A1–E grade bands. It is an indicative conversion CBSE prints for Class X/XII results, not an exact mark.

They use affine (offset) formulas, not a plain multiply. VTU 2015/2017/2018 schemes use % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, while the VTU 2021/2022 scheme reverts to % = CGPA × 10. JNTU is per-campus: JNTU Hyderabad and Anantapur use % = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, but JNTU Kakinada uses % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. That is why a CGPA of 8.0 gives 75% at JNTUH but 72.5% at JNTUK — pick the right campus and scheme.

Mumbai (general/non-engineering) used % = 7.1 × CGPA + 11. Engineering used a piecewise rule: 7.1 × CGPA + 12 for CGPA below 7 and 7.4 × CGPA + 12 for CGPA at or above 7. The engineering formula was repealed effective 1 January 2026 — Mumbai now issues a marks-based certificate instead — so use it only to back-calculate pre-2026 results.

It is the university-cited formula applied faithfully, but it is still an estimate for guidance. The percentage that counts is the one your university prints on your transcript or conversion certificate. Schemes change and streams differ, so always verify with your institution before quoting a percentage on a job or higher-study application.

Yes. Switch the calculator to “% → CGPA” mode and it inverts your university’s exact formula. For CBSE that is CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5 (so 76% ≈ 8.0), and for affine schemes it inverts the offset too. This is handy when an application asks for CGPA but you only have a percentage on hand.
