How this is solved

With a final worth w(as a fraction), your course grade is current × (1 − w) + final × w. Setting that equal to your target and solving gives final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. A required score above 100% means the target can't be reached; a score at or below 0% means it's already secured.

How the required final score is calculated

Your course grade is a weighted blend of everything before the final and the final itself. Fix your current grade, the final's weight, and your target, and there is exactly one final score that lands you on target — the tool solves for it.

w is the final's weight as a fraction — a 30% final is w = 0.30.

When the target can’t be reached — or is already yours

The arithmetic can hand you a number outside 0–100. That isn't a bug — it tells you something useful about where you stand going into the exam.

Required score above 100% = not reachable

Too much of the course is already locked in below your target, so even a perfect final falls short. The tool shows the highest grade you can still reach — aim there, or ask about extra credit.

Required score at or below 0% = already secured

Your pre-final grade alone already meets the target; even a zero on the final keeps you at or above it. The number is just the arithmetic minimum — you have real cushion.

Your course grade is a weighted blend of everything before the final and the final itself: grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the final’s weight written as a fraction (a 30% final is w = 0.30). Set that equal to your target grade and solve for the final: final = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. For example, with a current grade of 88%, a 30%-weighted final, and a 90% target: (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 = 28.4 ÷ 0.30 = 94.67%. So you would need about 94.67% on the final.

A required score above 100% means the target is no longer reachable through the final alone — even a perfect exam can’t pull your grade high enough, because too much of the course is already locked in below your target. The tool shows the highest grade you can still reach (current × (1 − w) + 100 × w) so you can set a realistic target. Your options are usually to aim for a lower final grade, or to ask your instructor about extra credit or a grade adjustment.

If the required score comes out at 0% or below, your grade before the final is already high enough that even a zero on the final keeps you at or above your target. The number is just the arithmetic minimum — in practice any score from 0% upward secures the grade. It’s a good sign you have some cushion, though you’ll usually still want to sit the exam and do your best.

The heavier the final, the more one exam can move your grade — in both directions. A 40% final can rescue a mediocre semester but can also sink a strong one; a 10% final barely nudges the grade, so a rough exam matters less but a great one can’t save you either. Enter the exact weight from your syllabus (for a cumulative final that is often 20–40%). If your final is worth 0%, no score on it changes your grade at all.
