How GPA is calculated on the 4.0 scale
GPA is the credit-weightedaverage of your grade points on the US 4.0 scale. Each letter grade maps to a point value, that value is multiplied by the course's credit hours, the products are summed, and the total is divided by total credits — so a heavy course counts for more than a plain average would give it.

Unweighted GPA puts every course on the plain 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for rigor — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB — so a weighted average can climb above 4.0. Switch the scale toggle to see both.

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of your grade points on the US 4.0 scale. Each letter grade maps to a point value — A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0. Multiply each course’s grade point by its credit hours, add the products, and divide by the total credit hours. So four courses at 3/4/3/2 credits earning A/B+/A−/B give (12 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 6.0) ÷ 12 = 3.53.
Unweighted GPA puts every course on the same 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder courses — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB — so a weighted scale can run above 4.0 (often to 5.0). An A in an AP class might count as 5.0 weighted but 4.0 unweighted. Colleges frequently recalculate to their own scale, so it helps to know both. The exact bonus and cap vary by school and district.
Cumulative GPA blends every term you have completed. Take your prior GPA and the total credits it covers, multiply them to recover your prior grade points, add this term’s grade points, then divide by the combined credits. For example, a prior 3.5 GPA over 30 credits plus a 4.0 term over 15 credits gives (3.5 × 30 + 4.0 × 15) ÷ 45 = 3.67. Enter your prior GPA and credits in the optional field to blend automatically.
It depends on the school. Most US institutions cap an A+ at 4.0 — the same as a plain A — so a perfect record tops out at exactly 4.0. Some schools award 4.3 for an A+, which lets a GPA edge slightly above 4.0 on an unweighted transcript. This calculator lets you switch the A+ value between 4.0 and 4.3; check your registrar’s grading policy to pick the right one.
They measure the same idea — a credit-weighted grade average — on different scales. GPA is the US convention on a 4.0 scale using letter grades. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the term used in India and much of South Asia on a 10-point scale (O = 10, A+ = 9, and so on).
