How MCQ + FRQ points become a predicted 1–5
Every AP exam mixes multiple-choice (MCQ) and free-response (FRQ) questions. Your correct MCQ count is weighted, each FRQ is weighted by its own factor, and the two halves add into a single composite. College Board compares that composite against the year's cut points to award a 1–5 — a scale that re-curves every administration, so we show a realistic estimate, not a false-precise official score.

Each AP exam has two parts: multiple-choice (MCQ) and free-response (FRQ). Your number of correct MCQs is multiplied by a weight, and each FRQ's points are multiplied by its own weight, so the two halves usually count for roughly 50% each. Those add up to a single "composite" score. College Board then compares your composite against that year's cut points to award a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. There is no penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers.
The cut points that separate a 3 from a 4, or a 4 from a 5, are not fixed. College Board re-curves them for every exam administration based on how the whole cohort performed and how difficult that form was. So the same composite can be a 4 one year and a 5 another. This calculator uses representative cut points to give you a realistic estimate, not an official result.
It is the cut points read in reverse. Instead of asking "what score does my composite earn?", it asks "what composite do I need to reach the next band?" The tool shows the estimated composite required for a 4 and for a 5, so you can see how many more multiple-choice or free-response points would move you up a score.

A 3 is officially described by College Board as "qualified", and many colleges grant credit or placement for a 3, though selective schools often require a 4 or 5. What counts as "passing" depends entirely on the credit policy of the specific college you are targeting, so check each school's AP credit page.
