Grade Needed on Final Calculator

Answer the finals-season question directly: what grade do I need on the final to get the course grade I want? Give the calculator your current grade, the final’s weight, and your target, and it returns the required score on the final — plus a grade-for-each-letter table showing what an A, B, C or D would each take. It is honest about the edges: if a target is already guaranteed or mathematically impossible it says so instead of printing a fake percentage. For example, with a 78% now and a final worth 40%, an 85% course grade needs 95.5% on the final. Free, private, no sign-up.

Quick answer

Grade needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight — the same weight-inversion, framed around what you need

  • Worked example: current 78%, final worth 40%, target 85% → (85 − 78 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 38.2 ÷ 0.40 = 95.5%
  • The grade-for-each-letter table solves A (90), B (80), C (70) and D (60) at once against your current grade.
  • A result above 100% means that letter is no longer reachable; a result at or below 0% means it is already locked in.

Frequently asked questions

What grade do I need on my final to pass?

Set your target to the passing grade (often 60% for a D or 70% for a C), enter your current grade and the final’s weight, and the calculator returns the score you need. With a 78% now and a 40% final, a 70% course grade needs (70 − 78 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 57.5% on the final.

Is an A still possible on my final?

Check the grade-for-each-letter table: if the score needed for an A (a 90% course grade) is above 100%, an A is no longer reachable and the row is flagged. The calculator downgrades to the best letter still within reach so you know what to aim for.
