Final Exam Grade Calculator

Work out the score you need on your final exam to finish the course at the grade you want. Enter your current grade, how much the final is worth, and your target course grade — this calculator inverts the weighting and tells you the exact percentage you need on the final. It also flags when a target is already locked in (even a 0 keeps you there) or out of reach (even 100% falls short), so you never see a nonsensical number. For example, with an 88% now and a final worth 30%, reaching a 90% course grade takes 94.67% on the final. Free, no login, browser-only.

Quick answer

Required final = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with weight as a fraction (30% → 0.30)

  • Worked example: current 88%, final worth 30%, target 90% → (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 28.4 ÷ 0.30 = 94.67%
  • The heavier the final, the more one exam can move your grade — a 30% final swings it far more than a 10% one.
  • If the required score comes out above 100%, the target is not reachable; at or below 0%, it is already secured.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the grade I need on my final exam?

Take your target course grade, subtract your current grade times the share not covered by the final, then divide by the final’s weight (as a fraction). With an 88% now and a 30% final aiming for a 90%: (90 − 88 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 94.67%. Enter your own numbers to get it instantly.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

That means the target is not reachable with the final’s current weight — the calculator flags it rather than showing an impossible number like 105%. Look at the grade-for-each-letter table to see the best grade still within reach, or ask your instructor about extra credit.
