Standard Roman numerals use subtractive notation — 4 is IV (5 − 1), not IIII, and 9 is IX. A symbol only ever subtracts one step down (I from V/X, X from L/C, C from D/M), so 99 is XCIX, never IC. Roman numerals spell every number from 1 to 3999 out of just seven letters — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). A number is built one place value at a time — thousands, then hundreds, then tens, then units — and the groups are written side by side. There is no symbol for zero.

Why 4 is IV, not IIII

Standard notation never repeats I, X, C or M four times in a row. When a fourth would be needed, you subtract instead: a smaller symbol placed before a larger one means "that much less". So 4 is IV (5 − 1) and 9 is IX (10 − 1).

IIII on clocks is the exception, not the rule

Some clock faces print IIII for 4 to balance the VIII opposite it. That is a decorative tradition — the standard mathematical form is IV, and that is what this converter produces and what it accepts when decoding.

Reading a year, the 1–3999 range, and decoding

The everyday use of Roman numerals is years — on buildings, movie credits, copyright lines and date tattoos. To read one, split it into place-value groups and add: MMXXIV = MM (2000) + XX (20) + IV (4) = 2024. To decode any numeral, add each symbol and subtract any that sits before a larger one.

Frequently asked questions

4 is written IV, not IIII. Roman numerals avoid repeating a symbol four times by using a subtractive pair: placing the smaller I before the larger V means "one less than five", so IV = 5 − 1 = 4. The same rule gives IX = 9 (10 − 1). You will occasionally see IIII on clock faces for visual balance, but IV is the standard mathematical form and the one this converter produces.
