Words to Pages Calculator

Turn a word count into an estimated page count for your essay or paper. The tool looks up a words-per-page value from your font size and line spacing, then divides: pages = words ÷ words-per-page. At the standard 12pt, a single-spaced page holds about 500 words, 1.5-spacing about 375, and double-spacing about 250 — so 1,000 words at 12pt double-spaced is roughly 4 pages. Because most academic essays must be double-spaced, a "4-page paper" usually means about 1,000 words, not 2,000. Switch the spacing and font size to match your assignment, and read the result as a close estimate — real length shifts with font, margins and paragraphing. Free, no sign-up, browser-only.

Quick answer

pages = words ÷ words-per-page; at 12pt words-per-page is 500 single, 375 for 1.5, 250 double

  • Worked example: 1,000 words at 12pt double-spaced → 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4 pages
  • Same 1,000 words single-spaced → 1,000 ÷ 500 = 2 pages; 1.5-spacing → 1,000 ÷ 375 ≈ 2.7 pages
  • Reading time ≈ words ÷ 225 wpm, so 1,000 words is about 4.4 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?

In a standard 12pt serif font, 1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced and about 4 pages double-spaced, with 1.5-spacing landing around 2.7 pages. These use the common publishing averages of roughly 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 per double-spaced page at 12pt. Font, margins and paragraphing shift the exact figure.

Why is 1.5 spacing not just single divided by 1.5?

Because line spacing does not scale word density linearly. A 12pt 1.5-spaced page holds about 375 words — a published typographic figure — not the 333 you would get from 500 ÷ 1.5. This calculator uses the looked-up table value so the estimate matches the references writers and instructors actually use.
