Hours Between Two Times Calculator

Work out how many hours and minutes are between two times — for shifts, study blocks, cooking, events or any elapsed-time question. Enter a start and an end time on a 24-hour clock and the calculator returns the duration three ways at once: as H:MM (for example 8h 30m), as total minutes (510), and as decimal hours (8.5) — the figure timesheets and payroll multiply by an hourly rate. Both times are converted to minutes since midnight and subtracted, so the answer is pure clock math that stays stable no matter your time zone. Subtract an unpaid break in minutes, and if the end time falls on the next day turn on Overnight so a graveyard shift reads correctly. Everything is computed in your browser and nothing is stored.

Quick answer

Duration = end − start (minutes), shown as H:MM, total minutes and decimal hours

  • 09:00 → 17:30 = 8h 30m = 510 minutes = 8.5 decimal hours
  • Subtract an unpaid break; turn on Overnight for a cross-midnight shift

Frequently asked questions

How many hours are between 9:00 and 17:30?

The gap is 510 minutes — 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours. The calculator subtracts the two times in minutes since midnight and shows H:MM, total minutes and decimal hours together.

How do I get the answer in decimal hours?

Divide the total minutes by 60. 510 minutes ÷ 60 = 8.5 decimal hours, which is what most payroll systems expect. The tool shows the decimal figure alongside the H:MM result automatically.
