BMI Categories Chart (underweight to obese)

See exactly where your BMI falls across the standard categories — underweight, normal, overweight and obese — with both the WHO and the Asian/ICMR cutoffs shown together. By WHO, underweight is below 18.5, normal is 18.5–25, overweight is 25–30, and obese is 30 or more. The Asian/ICMR chart is stricter: normal 18.5–23, overweight 23–25, obese 25 or more. Enter your weight and height (pounds and inches convert to metric automatically) and the calculator computes BMI = weight_kg ÷ height_m², classifies it on both scales, and shows your healthy weight range in kilograms. Categories are a screening tool: they flag a weight-for-height band linked to higher or lower population health risk, but they are not a diagnosis and cannot tell muscle from fat, so treat the category as a general marker rather than a verdict.

Quick answer

WHO: underweight < 18.5 · normal 18.5–25 · overweight 25–30 · obese ≥ 30

  • Asian/ICMR: normal 18.5–23 · overweight 23–25 · obese ≥ 25
  • The tool classifies your BMI on both scales at once

Frequently asked questions

What are the WHO BMI categories?

The WHO adult BMI categories are: underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5–25, overweight 25–30, and obese 30 or more. Some references split obesity further (class I 30–35, class II 35–40, class III 40+), but the core cutoffs are 18.5, 25 and 30.

What BMI is considered overweight?

By WHO cutoffs, overweight begins at a BMI of 25. By the stricter Asian/ICMR cutoffs, overweight begins at 23. So a BMI between 23 and 25 is normal for WHO but overweight for Asian/ICMR classification — this tool shows both.
