Time to Sober Up Calculator — hours until your BAC drops

Alcohol leaves the body at a roughly fixed rate of about 0.015% BAC per hour, and nothing reliably speeds it up — not coffee, cold showers, food or water. This calculator estimates your current BAC with the Widmark formula, then shows how many hours until it falls under the legal limit and back to roughly zero: hours = (current BAC − target) ÷ 0.015. Enter your drinks, weight, sex and time. Because BAC only falls at this fixed rate, the only safe plan after drinking is time plus not driving. This is an estimate only — never use it to decide whether to drive.

Quick answer

Hours to a target BAC = (current BAC − target) / 0.015

  • Elimination ≈ 0.015% per hour — nothing speeds it up but time
  • From 0.09%: ~0.7 h to under 0.08, ~6 h to near zero.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to sober up after drinking?

BAC falls at about 0.015% per hour. From 0.09%, it takes roughly 0.7 hours to drop under the 0.08% limit and about 6 hours to reach near zero. The rate is fixed — coffee, food, water and cold showers do not speed up the elimination of alcohol from your blood.

Can I drive once I am under the legal limit?

No — being under 0.08% (0.05% in Utah) is not a clearance to drive. Impairment of reaction time and judgement begins well below the per-se limit, and you can still be charged with impaired driving. If you have been drinking, wait longer and arrange a ride.
